Work Begins on Roseau Fishery Complex for Functional Operations
The Roseau Fisheries Complex, a gift from the Government of Japan which was severely destroyed by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, will once again be a hub of fishing activities in the near future.
Thanks to further assistance from the Japanese Government through a EC$30 MILLION Grant AID fund to the Government of Dominica, refurbishment and improvement of both the Roseau and Marigot Fisheries facilities will be undertaken.
The first phase of the project, removal of debris and demolition of damaged structural parts, commenced earlier last week.
This is in preparation for Phase 2, that is construction and rehabilitation of the Complex to allow for restoration of the ice-machines, cool storage areas, a demarcated vendors area and office space for the Fisheries Division Unit which is now being accommodated within the Ministry at Government Headquarters.
The Roseau Fisheries Complex before Hurricane Maria was essential to fishing activities on island serving over 60 fishers from Scotts Head in the south all the way to St. Joseph on the west coast with annual catch totaling over 110,000 lbs of fish.
In the interim, the Fisheries Division has identified alternative areas for the temporarily displaced fishers and fish vendors to be accommodated.
