Workshop for Building Human Capacity in Juvenile Justice Kicks Off
The Caribbean Community Secretariat has organized a workshop to build human capacity for juvenile justice in the country. The program, put together for personnel dealing with youth offenders, commenced at the Windsor Park Stadium.
The Secretariat is in charge of the Crime and Violence Prevention and Social Development Project which operates under the umbrella of the 10th EDF CARIFORUM Crime and Security Cooperation Program. The Ministry of Justice and National Security and the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Family and Gender Affairs will be taking a leadership role for the success of the event.
The workshop focuses on empowering justice personnel to deal better with youth offenders with a view to reducing crimes and violence among youths. It will also train participants on the principles and standards to adopt when relating with juvenile offenders, restorative justice philosophy, the mediation process, management and consequences of youth behavior, intervention and sanctions.
It also serves to boost the country’s existing response to the many challenges of youth crime and violence in Dominica, said Martin Anthony, an adviser with the Ministry of Family and Gender Affairs. He also revealed at the workshop that it is high time the Caribbean government evaluated how effective their response to youth violence in the country has been.
“The question though is: are we as a region responding appropriately to youth crime and violence? And that is the very reason why this workshop is here, coordinated by Mr. Luis Dogson, who is the project officer of the Crime and Violence project of the CARICOM Secretariat,” Anthony said. “Are we as a region responding as we should to youth crime and violence?”
