YEAC and Open Solutions Map Out Roseau for Disaster Risk Management

Open Solutions in partnership with the Youth Emergency Action Committee (YEAC) has mapped out Roseau for disaster risk management. The exercise was part of the Open Cities Project which comes up under the auspices of the Open Data for Resilience and Risk Management Initiative, Open Cities Latin America, and the Caribbean Enhancing Mapping for Resilience Building in Dominica.

Leading the initiatives for Open Cities Project in Dominica is the CEO of Open Solutions, Peter Ricketts, who revealed that the exercise will guide on catastrophic risk management procedures. He added that a database that will enhance public comprehension of environmental vulnerabilities will be created, and this will enable communities to be ready to act in the event of natural disasters.

A resilience planning and development consultant with CREAD, Samuel Carette, stated that his agency completed a mapping exercise that categorized the 41 communities in Dominica – based on their level of vulnerability – to boost disaster management capabilities. According to him, the recovery plan created by CREAD will cover public health emergency, essential infrastructure, natural catastrophes, border access and immigration, as well as terrorism among others.

The public are also encouraged to keep abreast of the activities of these agencies so that they can be better prepared to deal with environmental necessities that arise with approaching natural events.
