Skerrit Appeals for Diplomacy After Maduro Taken Into U.S. Custody

The Government of Dominica has called for restraint, calm, and renewed diplomatic engagement following confirmation by the United States that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was taken into U.S. custody during recent military action.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, January 5, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dominica is deeply concerned about the potential regional and international consequences of the development. He stressed that while nations have security interests, disputes of this nature should be addressed through dialogue and established international mechanisms.

The Prime Minister emphasised Dominica’s long-standing position in support of peace, sovereignty, and the rule of international law. He said the situation in Venezuela has implications not only for that country but also for Latin America and the wider Caribbean, given geographic proximity and longstanding economic and social ties.

Skerrit noted that Dominica maintains friendly relations with both the United States and Venezuela and believes constructive engagement remains the most effective way to reduce tensions. He said escalation could further destabilise the region and disrupt travel, trade, and cooperation among neighbouring states.

He also cautioned against speculation and misinformation, urging the public to rely on verified information while diplomatic discussions continue at regional and international levels. According to the Prime Minister, Dominica will continue to engage partners through appropriate channels and support any initiative that promotes dialogue and stability.

The government reiterated that matters of international legality and enforcement fall within the remit of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations, and said smaller states must consistently advocate for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
